Scalers & Curettes - Universal

Scalers & Curettes - Universal

Universal Curettes are often the instrument of choice for lite to moderate debris located supra or subgingivally.  With two parallel cutting edges that meet at a rounded toe and a smooth, rounded back surface, Universal Curettes can be used on mesial and distal surfaces without switching the working ends.  Popular Universal Curettes include Barnhart, Columbia, and Younger-Good. Differences include blade dimensions and the shank bends, with options for personal preference.

Langer Curettes

Langer Curettes have the shank design of a Gracey Curette combined with a universal blade. The advantage of this combination is an area-specific Gracey shank with the flexibility of a universal blade allowing adaptation to mesial and distal surfaces without changing instruments. Langer curettes are available in Standard, After Five and Mini Five versions.  The After Five and Mini Five Curettes have terminal shanks that are elongated by 3mm and are 10% thinner for access to deeper pockets.  The Mini Five blade is also reduced by 50% vs. the Standard Langer.

  • The Barnhart 5/6 has an average length shank, similar to most universal curettes, which allows it to be easily used throughout the dentition
  • The Barnhart 1/2 has a longer terminal shank than the 5/6 and allows extended reach around posterior teeth
  • The USC Barnhart Curettes: The USC Barnhart 1/2 curet is designed with a thin, sharp cutting edge that will slip easily under tight tissue and access all areas of the mouth. It is ideal for patients with light calculus but is also strong enough for use on teeth with moderate calculus. The USC Barnhart 5/6 is similar to a Columbia 13/14 universal curet, but the blade is longer and more substantial in order to be more effective on the proximal surfaces of the molars. Standard Curettes

Standard Universal Curettes are best used for removing Light or moderate-sized calculus deposits supra- and subgingival.
